With some help (a student dog-walker for before the puppy was old enough to stay alone for my whole workday) and tons of work (waking up really early to play for an hour before showering and going to work, rushing home from work for long walks, taking her places in the evenings where she could play with other dogs, etc.). Mostly I just gave/give her huge amounts of my time when I am home to make up for when I'm not. At this point she's a year old and has learned the routine really well.
If you mean "puppy" literally, I think I'd advise against getting a puppy if you won't be at home during the day to take care of it. An adult dog, adopted from a shelter or a rescue, might be a better option.
I used to have a dog in the city, but I worked at home in those days. For a while I had a roommate, too, whom I didn't like much, but he was all right as company for my dog.
I know there are people who work all day who have dogs. I think if the dog has the right temperament for that life--not a herding dog, for example--it could work. My dog experience is limited, though, so maybe my optimism is unduly grudging.
Well, advice from people who haven't but know about dogs is welcome too;). As it stands, there's a literal puppy in the works so (unfortunately) that's the situation we're dealing with. I'm hoping that as long as find someone (a housemate, a friend) who can come and play with the dog for a little bit in the middle of the day, it will work out okay. I'll have to look at what Ilan's done as well.
i'm not sure what kind of services there are where you are, but out here there seem to be a whole lot of dog walking and doggy daycare type business around. people in seattle are all about dogs and outdoors so i guess it makes sense. some of them really aren't too expensive though so maybe that's something that would be worth looking in to... if the dog has the opportunity to play and get some energy out during the day it will probably manage with the alone time much better
once it's old enough, a dog walker will definitely be a good and affordable investment. Daycare seems like it would be really expensive, but I should check in case I'm just making assumptions.
(ps- it's been so long since I've heard from you! I hope Seattle's treating you well)
